The flags went up. The leaders gave their speeches. The cameras rolled. Then the blood came. Hours after the UK, Canada, and Australia announced they were recognizing Palestine, a man walked into a wedding in New Hampshire and started shooting. He yelled “Free Palestine” as he killed one guest and wounded three more. That was not a coincidence. That was the global decision bleeding straight into local life.
Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, “Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognizes the State of Palestine.” Source: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/sep/21/australia-joins-uk-and-canada-in-formally-recognising-palestinian-state
Canada’s Mark Carney said his country “recognises the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future.” Australia’s Anthony Albanese followed, declaring recognition of “the independent and sovereign State of Palestine.” Source: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/sep/21/australia-joins-uk-and-canada-in-formally-recognising-palestinian-state
But in New Hampshire, police say Hunter Nadeau, 34, had no link to his victims. He simply shouted “Free Palestine” and opened fire at strangers at a country club wedding. Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of a Hamas founder, cut through the noise. “The Palestinian state will never exist. The world can recognize whatever it wants. But on the ground, there is no future for a state built on lies, terror, and division.” Source: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2025/09/21/palestine-state-will-never-exist-says-son-of-hamas-founder/
Here is the contradiction. Western governments are recognizing a state that does not run its own borders, does not hold real elections, and does not even speak with one voice. Gaza is run by Hamas, sworn to destroy Israel. The West Bank is run by the Palestinian Authority, weak and losing control. Diplomats keep saying recognition helps moderates. In practice, it gives energy to radicals.
Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu called the move “a reward for terrorism.” Members of his coalition demanded annexation of the West Bank. President Trump warned Canada’s decision “will make it very hard” to move forward on trade.
Yes, the suffering in Gaza is real. More than 65,000 people have died since October 2023. But recognition does not stop hunger. It does not rebuild homes. It does not make peace. It makes headlines, and it gives extremists on both sides something new to point at.
This is not peace. It is theater. And the cost is already being paid in blood, far from Gaza, in places that thought they were safe.
