Trump hits households and businesses with 50% tariffs on 407 metal products

  • Trump slaps 50% tariffs on 407 more metal products
  • Nails, pulleys, brackets, rails all get hit with no exemptions
  • CBP confirms every entry taxed with no transit relief

Trump’s tariff war just got bigger. Household basics like truck trailers, auto parts, nails, brackets, pulleys, and appliances now face 50% levies under expanded Section 232 rules. Customs and Border Protection made it clear: “no transit exemption… applies to all entries on or after 12:01 a.m. ET.” https://www.ghy.com/trade-compliance/50-section-232-tariffs-on-407-new-steel-and-aluminum-derivatives-take-effect-aug-18-cbp-guidance-available/

The expansion covers 407 new HTS codes from nails to rails. NBC put it blunt: “If it is shiny, metallic, or remotely related to steel or aluminum, it is probably on the list.” https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/trump-expands-50-steel-aluminum-tariffs-include-407-additional-product-rcna225899

CBP guidance warns importers must declare melt origin, weight, and dollar value for every shipment including embedded metals in finished goods. Failure means “rejection of the entry and delay of cargo release.” https://www.cbp.gov/trade/programs-administration/entry-summary/232-tariffs-aluminum-and-steel-faqs

There is no software, no grace period, no carve outs. Only a spreadsheet nightmare. Nails taxed. Screws taxed. Parts with metal taxed twice if the base is from China at 50% plus 25% stacked.

September and January rounds are already scheduled to include more materials. Copper is next. Maybe glass. Maybe rubber. Maybe your toaster.

This is not simplification. This is suffocation. The policy does not just tax imports. It criminalizes mistakes.
