President Trump has commuted the sentence of former Rep. George Santos, who pleaded guilty to fraud and identity theft to fund his campaign (AP News). Santos lied about his job, education, and personal history. He stole donor identities, including family members, to get money. These crimes hurt people and exposed gaps in election oversight.
“George Santos was somewhat of a ‘rogue,’ but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison,” Trump said on his platform.
The commutation sends a clear message: if you are politically loyal, you may escape punishment. Crimes that would normally send someone to jail can be ignored if the person is aligned with the party.
Santos also misused campaign finances and misled investors (AP News). Regulators could have fined him or audited his campaign, but the commutation removes that risk. People running future campaigns may now feel fraud and lying carry little danger if they have the right political connections.
