Aligned Council of Australia has written to Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at WHO rejecting a new pandemic treaty.
Labor dissolved the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties in March? Is the Opposition even aware of this?
Australia is on the verge of agreeing to legally binding international amendments under the International Health Regulations (IHRs) and potentially a new pandemic treaty — yet, at this critical moment, the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties (JSCT) has been dissolved.
Since the dissolution of Parliament in March 2025, the Australian Government has failed to re-establish the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties (JSCT) — the very body responsible for reviewing international agreements and facilitating public consultation.
In the months that followed, critical treaty processes with the World Health Organization have continued — including the adoption of amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHRs) — with no parliamentary oversight and no opportunity for public input.
This silence speaks volumes.
It is now clear: the Australian Government has no interest in consulting the people it represents.
In the absence of transparency and democratic process, the Aligned Council of Australia has exercised our right as concerned citizens (and as representatives of almost 2 million people) and written directly to Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization.
We have conveyed our absolute rejection of the 2024 International Health Regulations amendments. We know our opposition the the IHRs is shared by many Australians who feel ignored, unrepresented, and deeply concerned by the lack of scrutiny and open dialogue around these binding international agreements.
If our government will not speak for us, we will speak for ourselves.
Treaty review is not a formality. It’s a constitutional safeguard.
The Australian people have a right to full transparency, robust debate, and parliamentary oversight — not backroom approval.
