Israel bombs Syrian presidential palace and defense HQ. Damascus hit hard. Druze clashes escalate. Netanyahu issues warning.

Israel launched a direct military strike on the heart of Damascus early Wednesday, targeting the Syrian presidential palace and the Defense Ministry headquarters. The operation followed days of escalating violence in Sweida, where Syrian government forces and Bedouin militias clashed with Druze fighters. The ceasefire collapsed within hours. Israel responded with airstrikes aimed at halting what it called “attacks on Druze civilians.” Defense Minister Israel Katz posted, “The heavy blows have started,” alongside footage of explosions in central Damascus. Prime Minister Netanyahu issued a warning to Druze citizens in Israel not to cross the border, saying, “You endanger your life. Let the army act.”

The Israeli military confirmed it struck the entrance of Syria’s military headquarters. Syrian state media reported multiple casualties but withheld numbers. Smoke engulfed the Defense Ministry building. Al Jazeera broadcast live as three missiles hit the compound. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has not issued a direct response. His government claims its forces are responding to “sources of fire” inside Sweida. Israel says it will continue operations until Syrian troops withdraw.

The death toll in Sweida is climbing. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports 248 killed since Sunday. That includes 92 Druze fighters and 28 civilians. Government forces lost 138 personnel. Bedouin militias lost 18. Eyewitnesses describe summary executions, looting and burned homes. The Suwayda 24 outlet reported heavy shelling with mortars and artillery. Israeli Druze citizens breached the border fence to join relatives in Syria. The IDF is working to return them.

This marks the third consecutive day of Israeli strikes inside Syria. Previous attacks hit convoys headed toward Sweida. The Syrian regime, led by Islamist factions since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, has struggled to contain sectarian violence. The Druze community, spread across Syria, Lebanon and Israel, is now caught in a regional crossfire. Israel says it will not abandon them.

The United States condemned violence against civilians. Special Envoy Tom Barrack called for restraint and accountability. France demanded an immediate ceasefire. The European Union warned external actors to respect Syria’s sovereignty. Turkey accused Israel of sabotaging peace efforts. Syrian state television showed columns of smoke rising over Damascus. No air defense response was reported.

The strikes are expected to continue. Israel has reinforced its forces along the Golan Heights. Netanyahu says the goal is demilitarization of southern Syria. Katz says the regime will face “painful blows” until it backs off. The situation remains fluid. The capital is under pressure. The border is unstable. The Druze are in the middle.
