Aboriginal land claims now include Melbourne Cricket Ground

The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation are the Traditional Owners of the land the MCG sits on, a deep cultural connection they’ve held for millennia, with the stadium manager (MCC) working to honor this through reconciliation efforts like Reconciliation Action Plans and cultural acknowledgements.

The land has always been a significant meeting and ceremonial place for First Peoples, and while the Victorian government manages it, the Traditional Owners’ rights and heritage are formally recognized.

Rowan Dean of Sky News exposes weak and questionable anthropologists, politicians, judiciary, corporations and the High Court which have let this disastrous situation occur.

Key Points:

  • Traditional Owners: The MCG acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung as the Traditional Owners of the land (Country).
  • Cultural Significance: The area has been a sacred gathering place for ceremonies for thousands of years.
  • Management: The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) manages the MCG and Yarra Park on behalf of the Victorian people, but works with Traditional Owners.
  • Reconciliation: The MCC has a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to build relationships and respect Indigenous culture, including featuring Indigenous art, says Yarn Marketplace.
  • Native Title: There are ongoing efforts by Traditional Owners to formalize land rights and have a greater say in their Country, including areas around Melbourne.

So, while not owned by Aboriginal people in a modern property sense, the deep, continuous cultural ownership by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung is a fundamental part of the MCG’s story and present.

The MCG forms a part of the massive takeover of 70 per cent of the Australian land mass by Aborigines thanks to the Labor Commo grubs Whitlam and Hawke.

Successive Labor and Liberal governments have ensured the land grab continued to today’s obscene levels which must be repealed for Australia to survive as a nation.
