The shift is real. President Trump, once the loudest voice against foreign entanglements and endless aid packages, now says Ukraine must be armed. On July 7, during a White House dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump told reporters, “We’re going to send some more weapons. We have to. They have to be able to defend themselves.” That quote is not out of context. It came just days after the Pentagon paused shipments of Patriot missiles and interceptors to Ukraine. Now the pause is reversed. The weapons are moving again.
The Pentagon confirmed the change late Monday. Defensive weapons will be sent immediately. The announcement followed Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and a separate call with Vladimir Putin. Trump said he was “very disappointed” with Putin and “not happy at all.” Russia responded with the largest drone barrage of the war. More than 1,270 drones, 39 missiles, and nearly 1,000 glide bombs hit Ukrainian cities in one week. Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa were all targeted. Civilian casualties climbed. Zelensky said the call with Trump was “fruitful” and focused on air defense.
This pivot is not isolated. Trump’s foreign policy posture has shifted across multiple fronts. The deficit is climbing. The 2024 figure hit 6.4% of GDP. That’s nearly double the 30-year average. Middle East troop deployments are expanding again. The Epstein investigation has gone quiet. No client list. No blackmail operation. No evidence to charge unlisted third parties. No murder. Just suicide. And now Ukraine is back on the weapons list. The administration says the new shipments are part of “America First defense priorities.” That phrase is being used to justify the reversal.

The weapons package details are still classified. But Pentagon officials say Patriot systems and interceptors are back on the table. Zelensky has requested hundreds of thousands of drones and more long-range missiles. Germany is negotiating to fill the gap with additional Patriot batteries. The U.S. is reviewing its stockpiles. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered a global audit of weapons transfers. That review triggered the original pause. Now it’s being overridden.
Russia’s military is pressing hard. The village of Dachne in Dnipropetrovsk was captured on July 7. Ukrainian forces are stretched thin. Drone strikes are targeting recruitment centers. The front line spans 620 miles. Ukraine says it needs more air defense to hold the line. Trump says he agrees. That’s the pivot. The man who promised to end the war in 24 hours is now sending more weapons.
